M. Moorthy case - Call for reestablishment of Inter-Religious Council.

Malaysians have been following the issue of the body claim of Mount Everest climber M. Moorthy, 36 who died last Tuesday, whereby the Syariah Court ruled on Thursday that he was a Muslim and should be accorded a Muslim burial.

Although the Kuala Lumpur Hospital is retaining the body pending the high court decision on an application by Moorthy’s wife, it should be reminded that the incident again remind us the urgent important of having an Inter-Religious Council which had once existed in the first years of nationhood after Independence in 1957.

The re-establishment of the council will not only mark a greater maturity in fostering inter-religious understanding, goodwill and harmony in the country, but it will also resolve and achieve reconciliation on inter-religious matters, serving as a regular forum for the leaders of the major religions in the country.

All Malaysians, regardless of creed, must be proud of Malaysia as the confluence of the great religions in the world and work together to make Malaysia the model of multi-religious dialogue, understanding and harmony for the world.

Merry Christmas to all Christians Happy Holiday to all non-Christian Malaysians.
