SHAH ALAM: All the new local government councillors will have to attend an introduction course after they are sworn in. Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said the majority of them, to be sworn in before June 20, will be first time councillors.
"We intend to inform them of what is required from them."
Khalid said the new councillors will be community leaders and members of non-governmental organisations.
"State assemblymen will be excluded to give local leaders an opportunity to make decisions for their own communities."
Khalid said the exclusion of assemblymen from being councillors would not affect development.
He said assemblymen could still attend council meetings or become ex-officio members but would not be able to vote.
Khalid said all the councillors from Barisan Nasional have either stepped down or were told to vacate their posts.
