Change from yourself

Enail from Mabel

Hi there,

As an "outsider" (I was not part of the electoral this year because I just moved abroad), the results from the 2008 elections will be a wake up call not just for the Government but for the people.

My father is right - the people asked for a change, they made the choice by voting and now, we ought to live the choices that we made.

For starters...

...if we complain about the level of corruption, then we ought to STOP taking bribes. When the demand stops, the supply will as well.

...if we complain about the rubbish on the streets, then we ought to STOP littering. One tissue, one orange peel, it all adds up.

...if we complain about the parking woes, then we ought to STOP taking shortcuts and instead pay that RM0.60 for parking space.

...if we complain about the public transport, then we ought to STOP driving and instead take the public transport. The reason why it's crappy is because 1) no one uses it and 2) therefore it's not making money, thus 3) it cannot improve.

...if we complain about that illegal restaurant, then we ought to STOP patronizing illegal businesses!

If we can grow enough brains and balls to deny 2/3 majority to the Government, we sure do more than stop ourselves...WE OUGHT TO STOP OTHERS from making Malaysia a "third-world mentality" state!!!! Man does not live on an island himself. Start leaving notes on people's cars, taking photos and putting them up on blogs. Be more proactive YET be polite!

The change must come from within us individuals FIRST. We took the first step by voting (kudos to especially those who voted for the first time!)...

Now we ought to continue our journey. All the best to you folks back at home...

The more correct advice should be ... if we complain about the level of corruption, then we ought to STOP offering bribes! People always complain about the corrupted police etc and yet the minute they got stop for speeding, not fastening the safety belt etc, they automatically offer the cop some cash to avoid the summons. And then they started complaining about the corrupted policeman to everyone all over again.

I think that this comes down to enforcement as much civic responsibilities. We Malaysias are infamous for throw out waste everywhere BUT it doesn't help if there are either NO waste receptacles or they are overflowing. Say what you like about Singapore, they do try to keep themselves clean (although I have notice recently some rubbish as well). Fines work if there is proper enforcement and the funds collect go directly to benefit the people in the area or better cleanups

If you look at SS2 after pasar malam you see trash all over the place. There is a clean up after, but trash in drains, plastic bags everywhere. Wishfully I would like to take all the stuff people throw out and toss it in their houses.

As a side note, the election banners for the BN candidate are still all around the place in University Garden. Most of the DAP banners are down (some exceptions)
