CCID: There was a 4th police report

I am not sure how the mainstream media reported it. Let me relate my first-hand account as the prime target of a series of police reports filed against me in relation to my live commentaries over Al-Jazeera as news broke on the November10 BERSIH Rally.

Apparently, the authorities had acted on a fourth police report of the same nature, instead of the three common ones lodged by the Malaysian Islamic Consumers Association (PPIM), Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (KIMMA) and Pertubuhan Seni Silat Ikatan Kalam Malaysia as reported in The NST (November 18).

The fourth police report was lodged by an individual who had access to the computers and Internet connection at the KLCC Urusetia office located on the fourth floor of Dayabumi, Kuala Lumpur.

This was confirmed by the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigations Department (CCID) through the First Information Report (FIR), a copy of which was extended to my lawyer, Gobind Singh Deo, yesterday afternoon.

According to the FIR, the report was lodged at the Jalan HS Lee police station on November 19, one day after the NST carried the story. As the investigation is still on-going, I am not at liberty to release further details.

This is a summary of what transpired over the last four days leading to my interview with the Bukit Aman CCID yesterday...

DAP welcomes new 'transformer'

Opposition party DAP today officially welcomed a new 'transformer' into its 'family of transformers'.

Although secretary-general Lim Guan Eng did not specify if DAP is made up of 'Autobots' or 'Decepticons', he nevertheless said prominent blogger Jeff Ooi's decision to join the party will serve as a catalyst for other 'transformers' to trudge in his footsteps.

Lim said this during his speech at a tea party held in Petaling Jaya this morning to welcome Ooi into the party.

Later, he told reporters in response to a question that Ooi did not join the party because he was promised a seat in the coming elections.

"Ooi is genuine in joining DAP, he joins without any condition (but) we will definitely place him into consideration for a parliamentary seat," he said, describing Ooi as a 'qualified' candidate.

Party sources have claimed that Ooi might contest in either the Kelana Jaya or Serdang parliamentary constituencies.

Asked on whether it was an unhealthy culture for political parties to offer seats in return for new members before an election, Lim argued that there is no material gain for any person who joins the opposition.

"Instead, once you get elected (as an opposition representative), this is the beginning of the problems," he added.

'Stopped being superstitious'

In his maiden speech, the party's new 'transformer' outlined several of his focus areas, which include racial integration, equitable distribution of national wealth, promoting good governance and knowledge-based economy.

Ooi, who is considered the father of Malaysian blogging, was one of the first Malaysians to take to the blogosphere with his Screenshots weblog four years ago. He was also a former Gerakan member.

On why he had opted to leave the ruling Gerakan for DAP, he said: "I stopped being superstitious on the promises made by (Prime Minister) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi."

At the tea party, Ooi also unveiled his new political blog Jeff 4 Malaysia and handed over his membership application form to DAP national organising secretary Tan Kok Wai.

However, both Ooi and Lim kept mum on which branch the former would join.

Among the bloggers who turned up for the event include National Alliance for Bloggers pro-tem president Ahirudin Attan, secretary Nuraina A Samad and lawyer Haris Ibrahim.

Opposition party DAP has issued an open invitation to bloggers to enter into active politics as part of its efforts to recruit potential candidates ahead of an anticipated early general elections.

The call was made by DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang at a tea party held in Petaling Jaya this morning to welcome Malaysia’s leading blogger Jeff Ooi into the party.

“I will like to see more politicians taking up blogging and more bloggers entering politics,” he told about 70 supporters, bloggers and media representatives who were present.

The Opposition leader stressed that socio-political blogging is not an end by itself but a means to an end.

“A time must come when bloggers must decide whether they should ‘dirty their hands’ and make the transition from advocacy of their political ideals in cyberspace to enter the political terrain to be able to directly translate their ideals into action,” he said.

For a better Malaysia

The veteran politician expressed his wish to see Ooi and other bloggers taking their places in Parliament and state assemblies to create “a better Malaysia.”

Ooi, who is considered the father of Malaysian blogging, was one of the first Malaysians to take to the blogosphere with his Screenshots weblog four years ago.

His entry into the DAP is the latest in a series of high-profile recruits, most of whom are professionals.

It was reported earlier that DAP will continue to unveil its “trump card” every fortnight in the run-up to the forthcoming general elections, speculated to be called between end of this year and February next year.

Among the bloggers who turned up for the event include National Alliance for Bloggers pro-tem president Ahirudin Attan, secretary Nuraina A Samad and lawyer Haris Ibrahim.
