Clogged drains raising a stink in SS3

Writer: Alvin Yap
Published: Fri, 16 Mar 2012

PETALING JAYA: Summonses and warnings have failed to deter restaurants in SS3 from clogging neighbourhood drains with waste and a state lawmaker is calling on the council to take firmer action.

“They have been slapped with summonses and notices to stop dumping food directly into the drains. They’ve paid the fines but still carry on,” said Kampung Tunku assemblyperson Lau Weng San.

“They are responsible for the situation and have to stop dumping food waste into the drains.”

Lau, who visited the site at SS3/31 on Wednesday, said he would be raising the issue with the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).

He pointed out that the actions of the restaurants is raising the ire of other business owners as well as ratepayers in the area.

There are four restaurants that operate from the shoplots which have been identified as the culprits.

Lau added that he has been receiving complaints of stench due to the stagnant water at the drains, which measure some 800 m from end to end.

On another matter, Lau said waste collection and cleaning contractors serving the SS3 area still had a lot to do.

“The (performance) of contractors is not up to par yet. They are still missing their schedules once in a while,” he said

He called on ratepayers to call the city council’s Public Complaints Hotline number to lodge their grouses on domestic waste collection.

On March 1, a new batch of 32 solid waste contractors started their rounds in MBPJ areas.

位于SS3/2通往SS3/29、SS3/29通往SS3/80路、SS3/60斜坡通往SS3/14路四路段交界的交通灯在3周前失灵,造成当地交通混乱,不时发生车祸。

Townhall meeting in SS3

I thanked the residents of SS3 for attending the inaugural townhall meeting held in Jalan SS3/14 basketball court several weeks ago.

The townhall meeting was attended by about 100 residents from all walks of life in SS3. Also attending are Petaling Jaya DAP Councillor, Mr Darren Tiong and Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya Utara (PJU), YB Tony Pua.

Among the issue raised were infrastructure problems like drainage system, road resurfacing, traffic congestions, crime rate etc. Residents also raised concern on certain on-going development surrounding SS3, notably the proposed re-development of former Matsushita factory in SS8. They also took the opportunity to pose questions on several welfare programmes undertaken by the Pakatan Rakyat Selangor State Government.

Darren Tiong and I took the chance to explain some of the works done by the council and works to be completed by the council. A resident also raised his dissatisfaction on the poor condition of the two council's tennis courts next to the basketball court. Mr Darren Tiong has taken note about this and I have received emails from the resident regarding the proposed upgrading works to be done in the two tennis courts.

Meanwhile, YB Tony Pua also took the opportunity to brief the residents on the ongoing restructuring water service industry in Selangor.

This is a good experience for me and my service team as the townhall meeting serves as an outreach programme for us to reach out to the people face to face and deal directly with their issues. We use to meet the people in a lot of official functions but due to time contraint, we are not able to speak to everyone. Townhall meeting is different and it can help us to pull everybody together to discuss in depth in an unofficial gathering.

Townhall meeting is also very important to enlighten and inform the people about how allocations and works are processed in the government. More townhall meeting will be held in Kampung Tunku and the next stop will be in Section 22 Len Seng Garden.

If you do not know what is a town hall meeting, you can know more about it here. According to Wikipedia, a town hall meeting is "an informal public meeting. Everybody in a community is invited to attend, voice their opinions, and hear the responses from public figures and elected officials about shared subjects of interest, although attendees rarely vote on an issue".

So, for those who reside in SS3, see you at Jalan SS3/14 basketball court on this coming Saturday 8pm. Look out for more details here on my blog!

New street-lights in SS1 and SS3.

Congratulations to Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MBPJ) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) for installing a total of 198 150kW new street lamps on existing TNB lamp posts in SS1 and SS3 recently.
This is part of the effort from the council in collaboration with TNB to enhance street-lightings in SS1 and SS3 to combat rising crime rate in the two places.
Budget was approved by the council last year to improve street-lightings in SS1 and SS3 and the council is tasked to install 32 units electricity meters together with its casings.
TNB will be carrying out installation works including wiring works and it is targeted to finish in one month depending on the weather.
I was at Jalan SS3/39 this morning observing the installation work. Together with me are Petaling Jaya councillor Darren Tiong, his assistant Mr. Yap Chai Huat, my assistant Mr. Ning Sang and TNB Senior Technician for Petaling Jaya district, Encik Raduan Abdul Rahman.
I am satisfied with the works carried out by TNB and I wish the council can continue its good effort to improve street-lightings in other places of the council.

Keadaan Jenayah Di Taman Bahagia, SS3 Petaling Jaya Serious

Centenarian gets special visitor
By Star Metro YIP YOKE TENG

CENTENARIAN K.S. Narayana Iyer Subramania Vadhyar is the epitome of patriotism.

Having migrated from South India at the age of 16, he considers Malaysia his home country and is very proud of the fact that he was a government servant.

He studied at a technical college before joining the Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department as an engineer, and held the job until his retirement at 60.
Gesture of respect: Lau (right) explaining to Narayana the benefits of the Mesra Usia Emas scheme. With them are (from left) Vijaya Sundramoorthi Mohan and Jaya.

“He has always been thankful to the government for the pension he receives punctually every month,” said his daughter Vijaya Narayana, 64.

According to his children, he used to read the newspapers almost word by word to keep himself abreast of the goings-on around the world, and he liked to be at the stock market every morning — not to make money but to have a good understanding of the country’s economy.

“He never wants to go to just any clinic or hospital; he always asks us to take him to either the University Malaya Medical Centre or other public hospitals because he only trusts the doctors there,” Vijaya added.

In fact, Narayana hardly needs to visit the hospital as he has been free from health problems, including diabetes and even high blood pressure.

And, the affable man was born on Aug 31, 1908!

These days, he walks with some help. He could still have morning walks and exercises when he was 90, but a few years ago, he had a fall, and his movements have been since then.

“I shave every morning,” he told Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lau Weng San, who paid him a courtesy visit yesterday (Jan 2) at his house in SS3, Petaling Jaya, where he lives with his son Sundramoorthi Mohan and daughter-in-law S. Jaya.

“I’m quite well; I can walk, I’m living my life happily, I don’t need help,” he said when Lau helped him to fill up a form for the Selangor state government’s Mesra Usia Emas scheme.

Narayana appeared slightly nervous when he saw the large group of visitors, comprising Lau’s assistants, pressmen and MBPJ councillor Tiew Way Keng, but soon started to enjoy the company.

“He loves it when his children and grandchildren come to visit him on weekends; all the children are very close to him,” Jaya said.

He has six children (his eldest daughter passed away at the age of 70), 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

His wife passed away in 1977, and he never remarried.

The key to his long life apparently lies in a vegetarian diet and wholesome lifestyle. “The family observes a vegetarian diet for religious reasons, and he never indulges in unhealthy food. Even on his birthday, he takes only a pinch of cake,” Vijaya said, adding that he did not smoke or drink.

Lau said the Mesra Usia Emas scheme would entitle the family to a sum of RM2,500 upon the death of the senior citizen to help out with funeral expenses. Senior citizens aged 60 and above, who were born in Selangor or have lived in the state for more than 15 years, are eligible for the scheme.

“There are plans to increase the sum to RM3,500 while a proposal to give RM1,000 to senior citizens as medical allowance is still under review,” he said.

He said the electoral roll showed that Petaling Jaya had the highest number of senior citizens in Selangor as the city houses many government quarters for pensioners, particularly in Section 1, Section 5 and Kampung Tunku. There are 10,000 senior citizens in Damansara Utama, 9,000 in Bukit Gasing and 8,000 in Kampung Tunku.

“I brought up in the state assembly a proposal that Petaling Jaya should thus have a dedicated government hospital or clinic for senior citizens. The proposal is still being studied,” he said.

He added that the Mesra Usia Emas scheme was on-going and there was an average of 20 applicants every day.

Those who want to apply for the scheme can call 03-7875 4724 for details.

SS3 folks upset by Syabas’ action

By Star Metro OH ING YEEN

RESIDENTS of Taman Seaport in SS3, Petaling Jaya, were appalled by the sight of the bulldozed slope in Jalan SS3/51.

The residents had only wanted Syabas to trim the trees around the reservoir, said SS3 Taman Subang secretary Musa Abdullah.

“Syabas had promised to cut down only the trees that were growing within the gridline and to replant them, but as it turned out, they just cut down all the trees,” he said.

According to a letter from Syabas, it had received a complaint from residents in Jalan SS3/51 regarding soil erosion and fallen trees near their houses. It is also stated that the MBPJ landscape department had asked Syabas to cut down the trees that had fallen or were on the verge of falling, as the trees were of a species that was prone to rotting.

Musa said many of the trees that were felled were in good condition.

Denuded of trees: Musa (third from left) voicing his unhappiness over Syabas’ felling of trees near the reservoir in SS3/51 to Pua (second from left) and Lau (right). With them is Chang.

He also pointed out that this could lead to clogged drains and suggested that the authorities cover the drains.

“We want the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to have a landscaping proposal within a week and get the residents’ agreement as it affects us,” he said.

Resident Alfred Chang was worried that his garden would be demolished as part of Syabas’ project.

“It was designed by the previous owner and I continued tending the garden after I bought the house.

“Although the garden is part of the authorities’ land, I see no need for it to be demolished as there’s no problem of soil erosion because we have used concrete terracing,” he said, adding that it was ironic the issue was cropping up at this time, just after the celebration of International Green Day.

According to Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lau Weng San, Syabas wanted to cut down the trees to insert ports to strengthen the stability of the soil.

“When we asked, Syabas said it had obtained a permit from MBPJ to do so but the latter denied it,” he said.

A stop-work order was issued on April 12, but work resumed after a month.

Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said even if Syabas owned the property it had to obtain the residents’ agreement as it affected them.

“Syabas resumed work, stating that none of the residents had objected to it.

However, everything should be in black and white.

“Syabas should submit landscape plans to the MBPJ,” he said, referring to the verbal agreements made by Syabas.

Also present was newly-appointed MBPJ councillor Tiew Way Keng, who promised to raise the matter during the council’s full board meeting.

Told to pay duit kopi by rubbish collector

Bayar wang baru kutip sampah

Brickbat for Alam Flora

By STAR METRO DEBBIE CHAN

ALAM Flora, the rubbish collection and waste management company, is again in the news for the wrong reason.

It is under fire again, this time by the business community of SS3 in Petaling Jaya, complaining about the alleged unethical practices of its sub-contractors.

According to the SS3 business operators, the workers of the sub-contractors are demanding extra money to clear rubbish in their areas.

“They asked us to pay RM80 each to collect our rubbish, double the RM40 fee charged by Alam Flora,” restaurant owner Loo Yong Wee said.

The business community has approached Kampung Tunku state assemblyman Lau Weng San to help resolve the problem as the repeated complaints to Alam Flora have apparently fallen on deaf ears.

“Alam Flora belongs to the federal government and I think they should take responsibility to train their workers to be more responsible and ethical,” Lau said.

“The workers who are demanding bribes are foreign workers hired by the sub-contractors,” he said.

Loo said he had refused to pay the bribes and had since been disposing his rubbish himself.

“I have two big Alam Flora bins and I am now disposing of the rubbish myself. It's ridiculous,” he said.

According to Lau, rubbish collection has been a big issue in the SS3 area for some time now because the sub-contractors are not doing their job properly.

He said there were piles of rubbish strewn everywhere, especially near the shops and restaurants.

“I have repeatedly asked for an explanation from Alam Flora but have received no reply,” Lau said.

Lau said he did some investigation and had identified the two sub-contractors assigned to the SS3 area as Biopride Sdn Bhd and CityWaste Disposal Sdn Bhd.

“According to the Alam Flora schedule, the sub-contractors are supposed to clean the drains six days a week and collect rubbish on a regular basis,” he said.

Lau also observed that the drains in the area had not been cleaned for several months, resulting in most of them being clogged and smelly.

“I have filed complaints with Alam Flora on behalf of the SS3 business community and have so far only received response on the Gerai Wawasan area,” Lau said.

“I will give the sub-contractors a few weeks to rectify this matter before I raise the matter at the state level,” he said.

Lau pointed out that Alam Flora had the responsibility to ensure the community was given quality service in rubbish management.

“If the local councils are paying the company to do the job, then it is expected to do a good job or its contract should be reviewed,” Lau said.
