Life after 8/3/08
Life has been quite challenging after 8th March. You see, I am not using the word ‘hard’ or ‘difficult’, I describe it as challenging.
Since we do not expect to run the state government, there are various issues that we have to tackle as a state government, i.e. the mechanism of choosing councilors, village chiefs and village youth development committee chiefs. All three are positions which the state government has to fill in after BN-appointed councilors, village chiefs and village youth development committee chiefs are either removed or resigned.
Also not to forget is community issues, there are just endless about it. Major community issues in Kampung Tunku are mainly on over-development, preservation of green-lungs, open spaces and a cozy livelihood for the community and security problem.
For example, there is a complaint from SS3 when Syabas proposed to clear a hillslope surrounding one of its reservoirs in that area. The residents are upset by this because all this while they are actually ‘adopting’ the piece of green lung, which just lie along their backyards.
There were also complaints on Paramount View Condominium construction site. Questions were raised on why and how local authority can approve a medium-density strata residential area in the middle of a low density housing area. And the site is a small piece of land situated next to LRT rail link and TNB’s high tension cable.
Will the condo-occupants not afraid of the noise pollution and the radiation of the electromagnetic wavelength? Even before the project finished, surrounding residents are already not satisfied with the pro-long working hours and the noise pollution caused by the developer.
Well these are just tips of the iceberg. I intend to set-up another community blog to give you, readers a better platform to contribute ideas on how to improve our neighbourhood. Details to be announced later once it is done.

Azalina's latest decision lauded
By Stephen Ng
After numerous calls by members of the public, Tourism Minister, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has finally relented to the idea that it is the responsibility of Tourism Malaysia after all to continue promoting tourism in Penang and Langkawi.
Although the minister has stopped short of mentioning the other four states, I am sure that this latest announcement made by her after much deliberation is wise.
I am not surprised that it is a post-cabinet announcement, because the minister had earlier on kept her stand, singling out particularly the states that have fallen into the hands of the Pakatan.
Malaysians have voted for change, but Malaysia cannot afford to be a country where the losing party tries to sabotage and grind the new state government machinery to a halt.
As the country’s democracy matures, the leaders have to realize that they cannot take away the rice bowl of the people. If they do that, they will eventually find that they have to bear the brunt of the people’s resentment against their unwise decisions.
I wish to highlight that agencies like Tourism Malaysia or Matrade should be apolitical, and its officials have no business in trying to divert tourists’ or investors’ attention to only certain states.
Their role as a tourism promotion board should be to strive to study the strengths of each tourist or investment destination, and promote tourism and investments in these states, without even thinking whether it is under the Barisan Nasional or the Pakatan Rakyat.
It is easy to marginalise states won by the Pakatan Government, but such an effort will only seek to kill the industry and the country’s economy as a whole. If the meeting planners choose to host their events in the Pearl of Orient, there is no reason for Tourism Malaysia to try to divert their attention to the Land under the Wind. Investors may have their reasons for picking certain states to build their plants.
By appointing a different committee or certain individuals with whom the Federal Government can liaise with is a sign of immaturity on the part of our leaders. The people will see this as a redundancy of manpower and resources in a dysfunctional government at both Federal and State levels.
Will the rakyat then decide to only vote for the Barisan Government? I dare you dream this will happen, when people have become hardcore with years of being marginalised.
The BN-led Government under Datuk Seri Abdullah A. Badawi should, on the contrary, be happy that the Pakatan State Governments are now busy trying to promote tourism in their own states, instead of giving their 100 per cent opposition towards the Federal Government.

Proposal to punish non-Muslims for khalwat
KUALA LUMPUR: Non-Muslims committing khalwat (close proximity) with Muslims should also be held liable for the crime, two Islamic bodies have proposed in a resolution to be sent to the Attorney-General's Chambers.
The Islamic Institute of Understanding Malaysia (Ikim) and Syariah Judiciary Department Malaysia said non-Muslims found committing khalwat with Muslims should also be sentenced, perhaps in the civil courts.
"Muslims are sentenced in Syariah courts ... but we don't have the jurisdiction to sentence non-Muslims," Syariah Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Mohd Asri Abdullah said at a seminar on reviewing Syariah laws organised by Ikim and the department.
"Their non-Muslim partners can probably be sentenced in the civil courts, to be fair to both parties," he told reporters after closing the two-day seminar on Wednesday.
He said the proposal, contained in a draft resolution from the seminar's findings, would be forwarded to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AG's Chambers).
"It is up to the AG's Chambers or the relevant authorities to decide how to create such law," he said, declining to say when the proposal would be made to the Government.
The two bodies have also proposed stiffer penalties for Muslims caught in such offences as khalwat, prostitution, alcohol consumption and gambling.

Chemistry, politics and sports
LAU Weng San, 30, the state assemblyman for Kampung Tunku, Petaling Jaya is a strong Liverpool fan who has managed to mix politics and sports to his life. Born in Ipoh, Lau, 30, is a chemical engineering graduate of University Malaya.Q: What drove you into politics?
A: When I enrolled as at Univer siti Malaya, I was away from my family in Ipoh and was on my own. That gave me more freedom.
During my varsity years, my friends and I were exposed to the way elections took place. I was also a student leader and had a taste of politics.
As students, we needed to go through many channels of bureaucracy before a simple project could be carried out.
My fellow uni-mates were facing difficulties with the Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN). Most students rely on loans from PTPTN to manage their student lives.
It was an eye opener to me as I witnessed the layers of bureaucracy which slowed down decisions making and the victims are always in the dark.
Almost two years after my graduation, I joined DAP in 2004. I was Lim Guan Eng's political secretary from June 2005 to February 2008.
At that time, I was also a columnist for Sin Chew Jit Poh and Nan Yang Siang Pau. Because of time constraint, I have now stopped writing.
Q: Who's your mentor?
A: My mentor is certainly Lim Guan Eng, and he's still my mentor. I must admit I learned various aspects of politics from him and his father, Lim Kit Siang.
I also learned from Hew Kuan Yau, the political secretary of Kit Siang.
He's a PhD holder in political science and knowledgeable too. He's a socialist, and his ideologies are similar to the ones practiced in the Labour Party in UK.
Q: Do you have a girlfriend?
A:Yes I do, and I am planning to marry her in a year or two. We are both DAP party members. We met for the first time during an event organised by the Seputeh DAP.
Q: What is the most high-tech gadget you own?
A: I have an IBM laptop. It's not the latest but it serves its purpose. And I have a simple handset and a digital camera with video function.
Q: Where do you hang out?
A: Bookstores are my favourite joints. I love books and I could easily spend RM1,000 a year on reading materials. But at times I can't finish reading them. Currently, I am reading The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman.
Q: Are you active in sports?
A: Yes, I love football and I'ma strong Liverpool supporter.
Q: Any favourite restaurant?
A: Any hawker centre is okay with me and my favourite food is nasi campur.
Q: How long do you want to serve as a politician?
A: I think I am more suited as a politician than an engineer and I want to be able to serve the community for as long as I can.
Q: What was the first thing that came into your mind when you knew you have been elected?
A: The first thing which struck me was the huge responsibility I will have to shoulder. My mind wasn't screaming in joy but was thinking of all the measures needed to help the rakyat. They have put their trust in me, and I am answerable to them.
Q: Do you blog?
A:Yes I do. You can visit my blog at www.lauwengsan. com For Lau Weng San, a digital camera comes in handy in his role as a state assemblyman.
Cheer Pakatan Rakyat
I cheer the formation of Pakatan Rakyat (PR - Public Relation??).Much to be happy about is Hadi Awang's statement that the issue of Islamic State policy was not part of the party’s constitution.
Hadi statement is correct when the media should be looking at the (PAS) administration of Kelantan and Terengganu which has been accepted by people of all faiths.
This shows a certain level of maturity in Malaysian Politics when PAS can tune down its Islamic State policy which is incompatible to the multi racial and religious Malaysia society.

Lodge complaints yourself, how?
My friends, Edward Ling (Assistant to Hannah Yeoh, DAP ADUN for Subang Jaya) and Edward Lee (DAP ADUN for Bukit Gasing) had put up some interesting tips here and here on how to lodge complaints with MPSJ / MBPJ.
I don't intend to create new post on similar subject. For those who wish to learn about it, just follow the hyperlinks provided. Or the best you can do is to lodge your complaint here with MBPJ.
We want to educate and help the voters to help themselves. Voters are encouraged to lodge complainst THEMSELVES so that they own their complaints.
It is only when they complaints are ignored after numerous trials, then the elected representatives should be brought in.
As Edward Ling pointed out, help us to help you.

Selangor State Government should also target to reduce NRW to below 20 percent in five years
Selangor State Government has announced that the first 20 m3 water will be provided free of charge to household users since 1st June 2008.
The decision will certainly reduce the economic burdens of the people, especially those belong to the middle lower income group. Though, Selangor State Government should not neglect the long term goal of providing high quality water to the people and reducing the percentage of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) in Selangor without increasing the economic burdens of the people
In fact, Syabas managed to reduce NRW from 42 percent in 2005 to 37 percent in 2006. Syabas profit also increased from RM 900 million in 2005 to RM 1.1 billion in 2006. We believe that the biggest contribution that Syabas can provide to its users is to further reduce NRW to below 20 percent in five years.
Former Selangor Exco in charge of Public Facilities and Infrastructure Abdul Fatah had on 30th October 2006 increased water tariff and during that increase, it was also announced that 42 percent of household users who consumed less than 20 m3 a month will not be affected. Today, the percentage has increased to 45 percent and it seems that the strategy has always been targeted on household users who consumed less than 20 m3 a month.
We need to understand that such measure is only a short term measure. Syabas should be reminded that their long term goal is to provide sustainable water supply to all users in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. One major project under Syabas to be deliberated is the Pahang-Selangor water supply project which was iniated by the previous Selangor State Government. The current Selangor State Government has a huge responsibility to ensure that the project will not pose serious negative impact on the people of Selangor.
The same reminder should also go to household users in Selangor that they should not take things for granted even when the first 20 m3 water will be provided free of charge as this should be seen as a push factor for them to preserve water usage to below 20 m3 every month so that they can enjoy free water supply.

Release Manoharan and others from ISA detention to attend swearing-in ceremony for Selangor ADUNs.
According to formal notice from Selangor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Secretariat, the swearing-in ceremony for all 56 elected State Legislative Assemblypersons will be conducted on Tuesday 8th April 2008.
Therefore, we urge the Federal Government to release YB M. Manoharan, DAP ADUN for Kota Alam Shah before the swearing-in ceremony so that Manoharan can attend the ceremony and thus making the swearing-in ceremony a complete ceremony.
The continued detention of M. Manoharan under Internal Security Act (ISA) is no longer accepted by the people as voters in Kota Alam Shah had delivered a clear message to the Federal Government that they want Manoharan to represent them in the State Legislative Assembly with a majority of 7184 votes for Manoharan.
The Federal Government should release Manoharan so that he can effectively discharge his duties and responsibilities as an elected representative for Kota Alam Shah. Continued detention on Manoharan would mean that the Federal Government has no will to allow elected representative to discharge their duties and responsibilities and this is not a responsible government should do.
In fact, the Federal Government should not only release Manoharan but also the other four Hindraf ISA detainees, i.e. P. Uthayakumar, G. Kanabatirau, K. Kenghadharan and T. Vasanthakumar.
Their intention of being leaders of Hindraf is merely to voice out for the long marginalized Indian community in Malaysia and should not be regarded as threatening the security of the nation.
